Review The Catfish Plantation - When the Catfish Plantation Restaurant in Waxahachie, Texas is mentioned, the first thing people usually ask is "that's the haunted restaurant, isn't it?" Yes, it is. It is known far and wide in that realm. However, we locals know they have the best catfish around. On a recent visit I sampled the baked catfish, which is nicely seasoned and laid upon a bed of seasoned rice and served with a choice of two sides. I chose the fried okra and cole slaw. The okra was like my mother used to make. It did not have that thick crusty coating like so much of the okra these days. It was light, crunchy, and dusted with cornmeal; very southern-style. Although the sweet cole slaw was a great accompaniment to the catfish, it lacked the zing of a good shot of apple cider vinegar. That sweet-sour play is what makes southern cole slaw a standout. My companion ordered the fried catfish with fried jumbo shrimp, also with two sides. The catfish was just right, seasoned to perfection and not too salty. The crust was lightly done and the fish was fried perfectly, not overly done. The huge jumbo butterfly shrimp were magnificent. The batter was almost tempura-like and fried to perfection also. The green beans were excellently done, cooked with ham, very southern-style. With each plate was a scrumptious hush puppie, fried just right and seasoned perfectly. We would have loved to have had two instead of just one. Then there was the bread pudding. It usually comes drizzled with white chocolate sauce, which is very sweet. You might want to ask for the sauce on the side. The bread pudding, for my taste, was sweet enough, and with a generous helping of whipped cream was a great finish to a great meal. The Catfish Plantation has recently come under new ownership and has new chefs. This change of staff has greatly improved the food quality and if you have not been there lately, you will be pleasantly surprised, as we were. Watch the local newspaper for special events at the restaurant and plan Sunday lunch after church. You will not be disappointed.
